Was Justice Served for Trayvon Martin?

Angelica Euseary

On February 26, 2012, seven teen year old Trayvon Martin was walking home from a local corner store with skittles and an Arizona Iced Tea. He soon realized he was being followed by 29 year old, neighborhood watcher George Zimmerman. Zimmerman didn’t stop following the teen; instead he attacked him. In the end, Martin ended up shot and killed.

“When Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said that ‘this could’ve been my son’. Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could’ve been me, thirty five years ago,” said President Barack Obama.

President Obama is absolutely right; this could’ve been anyone, any race, any ethnic group and the fact that Zimmerman got away with this child’s murder is idiotic.

After 17 months, Zimmerman was found not guilty of all charges. The jurors were all wrong when they gave this man his verdict. It doesn’t matter that Martin was black, and Zimmerman is white. What matters is how this man just got away with murder; he murdered a kid and its not right.

“Trayvon Martin’s case has exposed some people as monsters…not just Zimmerman but anyone who makes excuses for a man who kills an unarmed child,” tweeted Gabrielle Union.

People have been put in jail for years for drug possession and dog fighting, and George Zimmerman just gets a to kill a kid and not have to suffer any consequences? He took someone’s life and got away with it.

Trayvon Martin didn’t deserve to die. George Zimmerman should’ve minded his own business. He followed Martin and attacked him. This grown man ended up killing a teenager because he felt endangered. All Zimmerman had to do was keep walking because it was obvious that Trayvon Martin meant no harm to this man.

Martin didn’t speak to Zimmerman until he noticed him following him. After the teen spoke to Zimmerman, he attacked him and that’s how the brawl started.

Some may say that this verdict was fair; fair because Trayvon Martin did attack George Zimmerman. But did they ever stop and think of why Martin attacked him? This kid was fighting for his life. Zimmerman was trying to hurt him and he fought back, in self defense. George Zimmerman had a gun, and all this teenager had was a package of Skittles and an Arizona Iced Tea.

Let’s flip the switch: If Martin had wrestled Zimmerman, ended up with the gun, and shot/killed him, do you think he’d be charged not guilty because of ‘self defense’ for  his murder?

We all know what George Zimmerman did was wrong, and it’s not fair that someone, an innocent teenager, had to die because of his ignorance. Zimmerman has gotten away with killing a person. Football player, Michael Vick served 23 months in a federal prison for dog fighting and George Zimmerman plead not guilty for following, attacking, killing a child?  What type of justice system lets a grown man get away with murdering a human being but will put someone in jail for almost two years for fighting with dogs?

There were many rallies and protests took place to support Trayvon Martin and his George Zimmerman’s unfair ruling, including many civil rights activists, like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

We need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture: A totally different outcome would’ve came about Martin was white and Zimmerman was black. Zimmerman would’ve been locked up and it wouldn’t have taken them a year and five months to come to their conclusion (verdict).

Another fact of matter is that gun violence is a big problem, not just in Florida, but world wide. Was George Zimmerman even licensed to have a gun? Will justice be served for Trayvon Martin? Is this the end?

Here is a graph showing how firearm violence has increased over the past three years.

Mobile Journalism

Mobile Journalism Gone WILD!

According to a PewResearchCenter survey, released in December 2012, 41% of men, and 30% of women were getting news daily on their cell phones. (http://multimedia.journalism.berkeley.edu/tutorials/digital-transform/mobile)

Mobile journalism, in my opinion, is a rival of newspaper. They compete to publish news, if you understand what I’m trying to say. It’s a very important topic, and people come across it everyday, for example, when you pick up your phone and look for the news, instead of an actual newspaper.

(Didn’t know how to state my opinion without saying I) feel like mobile journalism is a great thing and its taking newspaper, printed news, by storm. It’s a quick, easy, and simple way to get the inside scoop with having to get an actual newspaper. Why pay a dollar to get the Free Press everyday, when its quicker to look it up on your phone or tablet?

Getting news on your phone is great because its easy access and it’s a cool and fast way to find out news.

People on the opposing side would say, “Why change something new?” Those people have probably been depending on the actual newspaper for years and have no idea what a smart phone is.

Others may say that because of mobile journalism, people have lost jobs and now there are fewer jobs in the journalism field because they’ve been replaced by things like mobile journalism and tabloids.

I’d have to say that mobile journalism isn’t a bad thing. I like it; it’s a great way to get news and its simple.

I like it because I don’t have to flip through the newspaper to find my news. When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I see is an email from The New York Times, giving me my news before my day has even started. When newspapers get delivered, sometimes the news is already been given from an online, social media website. Why not make mobile journalism the dominant source of news?

If you’re reading this, you too probably access news more on your phone than through an actual newspaper. Actual newspapers are great, but nothing beats that notifications that pops up on your phone or tablet with fresh news.

Mobile journalism is going to take over the world, and sooner or later it’s going to be one of the few ways you can find news. All that can be said is, get with it or get lost.
